Sarah: Bright-coloured manicures: hot pink, orange, red. That way you always look, ahem, polished — even in last season’s dress. Easy! Just hire a personal stylist. Memorize this line: "Mom, Dad –I’ve come to the conclusion that if we cancel my piano lessons, math tutor and the subscription to National Geographic, we can hire Lauren Conrad’s personal stylist for fifteen minutes." However, if you’re one of those unfortunate teens with sensible parents, you’re probably outta luck. Time to move to Plan B: do-it-yourself celebrity style.

Miley Cyrus
Like her character (average girl by day, pop star by night Hannah Montana), Miley Cyrus sports a merry-go-round of looks. But from flirty frocks to leather leggings, what stays consistent is a “fearless fashion sense” that’s bolstered by accessories, says Le Chateau spokesperson Marlene Robillard.
“Think bold rock ‘n roll jewellery or a killer pair of short booties,” she advises. Use a large curling iron to achieve her playful locks, instructs Jessica Hocker, a stylist at iDaburn salon in Vancouver. "Let each section cool before gently separating curls using a small amount of defining cream and lightly twisting the ends for a smooth defined finish," she says.

Mary Kate Olsen
In Mary Kate’s ensembles, high-end couture and vintage treasures are about as inseparable as twin sisters. MK tends to go loose on top and skinny on the bottom, and is rarely caught in flats. "Be your own billionaire bohemian with a vintage fringe or faux fur vest layered over a billowy top," suggests Robillard. Her messy blonde tresses are one length, with a few soft layers framing the face. Apply a texturizing spray while hair is still damp then air-dry or use a diffuser on low. "Try not to disturb the hair until it’s completely dry," says Hocker.

Blake Lively
"Often seen wearing a classic blazer with denim and heels, Blake makes her mark by trying not to make one at all," says Robillard. Unlike her character Serena on Gossip Girl, Blake’s style is simple and clean. "Try a high-waisted denim pant, an uncomplicated dolman-sleeved sweater and a down-to-earth plaid coat." Blake’s cut is layered and highlighted throughout. Get her soft, tousled 'do by applying mouse and blow drying with a round brush. "Once dry set hair with large hot rollers, being sure to spray each section with a medium hold spray before wrapping around roller," says Hocker.

Blair Waldorf
Okay, so she’s a fictional character on Gossip Girl, but her to-die-for looks are Sarah Jessica Parker meets Audrey Hepburn. Trademarks include: headbands, pearls, bows and disgusting perfection. Treat your walk-in closet (as if) to one of fall’s must-haves: the pleated skirt.
"Or take your pick from pretty floral dresses, ruffle dresses or a large flower hair clip and you’ll look like you just stepped off a private jet as well," says Robillard. Can’t afford your own pony? Aim lower and settle for mimicking Blair’s shiny chestnut pony tail. "Adding some texturizing spray in the crown, quickly rough dry hair with your head upside down," says Laura Garwasiuk, also a stylist a iDaburn Salon. When it’s dry, smooth with a paddle brush, then back comb one-inch sections around the crown. Use hair spray to fortify each portion. "Smooth over…and gather at the nape of neck and loosely tie with elastic or ribbon."

The High School Musical star’s personal costume department is decidedly laid back. Comfy denim and cozy scarves take centre stage. "Mimic her love of layering with a pair of skinny jeans, a zip-up hoody or blouson and a long scarf or necklace," says Robillard. Her coif is also low maintenance. "Vanessa is all about the waves and the epitome of boho chic," says Garwasiuk. Apply a light curl crème from roots to ends then air dry or blow with a diffuser. "Spritz in a salt water spray for a beachy look."

Jonas Brothers
"Nick, Kevin and Joe like to mix well-tailored suiting pieces with offbeat accents like boyish bold stripes and stylish sneakers," notes Robillard. "Start your own boy band by topping off your outfit with a check scarf or skinny tie or by mixing a preppy striped sweater with an edgy moto jacket." The superstar sibs are beyond barbershop, rockin’ everything from a pseudo-fro to Brit pop mop. On curly hair, use a cream to tame frizz, says Gawasiuk. For an edgier style, use a thin flat iron and straighten pieces in different directions. "When done use a medium hold wax starting from the back and working it through the hair towards the face."

Having “virgin hair“, it was an absolute treat to be involved with Shear Genius and get my hair cut, colored and styled at the sleek and modern Ian Daburn Salon in Yaletown.
Jessica was my senior stylist for the afternoon and we spent a great deal of time going through my needs. She gave me several options but in the end, I really just told Jessica that I trusted her and her scissors to give me the most suitable look: the “Disconnected Bob with a Textured Veil”. That means, Jessica updated the classic bob cut and layered my hair in a “disconnected” way with some pieces longer than the other.
The hair at the back of my head is also shorter and it smoothly glides into longer hair at the front, framing my face. The whole process took a careful 4 hours but it was a comfortable procedure as I was throughly entertained with tea, coffee (mmm latte), chocolate, magazines, as well as a personal greeting from Ian Daburn himself. I love my trendy, new haircut and have gotten so much positive feedback about it. At times, I feel like a walking billboard for Ian Daburn Salons but I’m sure proud of it!

Tides of change

A Vancouver mom rides the wave to happiness.

At 42, Julie of North Vancouver, B.C., is thrilled about what’s on the horizon.

But it took a few hard knocks to get there. Two years ago, she and her husband were excited to expand their family when Julie suffered a miscarriage that landed her on the bathroom floor, her nose shattered and her spirit broken. When, a few months after the accident, Julie discovered she was pregnant again, it was the best medicine she could have received. Now with a new baby and her nose back in shape, Julie wanted a fresh look to match her fresh start. Wanting to lend a hand, the Rouge makeover team headed west.

Colour enhancement

Inside the I.daburn salon in Vancouver’s trendy Yaletown district, Colorists Nicole Hyde began by highlighting Julie’s dark locks. She wanted to break up the dense, solid colour through the back and in the front, where greys were starting to show. One the highlights were done, Nicole added an all-over toner to subtly enhance the lighter sections and blend them into Julie’s existing colour. Julie now had hair with a greater dimension and a sun-kissed look.

Lots of layers

Stylist Laura Garwasiuk felt Julie’s single-length hair was sitting heavily on her face and needed some body and texture. Not wanting to make a drastic change, Laura kept some of Julie’s length while layering the back and adding a long fringe in the front. The outcome was a style with bounce and one that Julie could easily maintain.

Feature focus

Makeup artist Pam Daburn then stepped into add a touch of drama. She neutralized Julie’s uneven skin tone with liquid foundation and added blush along the cheekbones. To bring out Julie’s fierce blue eyes, Pam layered a few shades of warm brown shadow, liner and mascara, and coated her lips in a natural gloss.

When Julie was finished, she looked younger and sexier, with an aura of confidence that hadn’t been there before. It was a beautiful pick-me-up after a once terrible fall.

Times change and so, inevitably, do hairstyles. In the 1990s it was the “Rachel,” Jennifer Aniston’s long aerated shag. Before that, it was the “Farrah Fawcett,” a leonine mane synonymous with the disco era. In the late ’60s, it was “the Sassoon,” a boyishly short bob created by Vidal Sassoon and popularized by Swinging London’s ultra-gamine Twiggy. And before that, it was Jackie’s bouffant, the lacquered crown of the queen of Camelot.

Now, the “Pob” is poised to become the It do, thanks to Victoria “Posh Spice” Beckham, wife of L.A.’s hot new soccer saviour.

Though few Canadians may have heard of the term — a handy hybrid of Posh and bob — the hair-obsessed will tell you that Beckham looks gorgeous in her gleaming asymmetrical topper. And though she may have dibs on the one and only Becks, her hairstyle is now anyone’s for the snipping.

Ian Daburn of i. daburn salon in Vancouver has been tailoring the Pob for eight to 12 customers a day for the past few months. And The Loft for Hair in Gastown has customers of all ages asking for it.

“We figure it’s probably going to be the next big one,” says Franco Peta, owner of Vancouver’s Alta Moda Hair. “Not everyone can wear it. You’ve got to have the hair and you’ve got to have the face for it. It’s courageous.”

Perhaps the Pob is a western craze, provoked by all the feverish hype about the Beckhams’ recent move to L.A. Certainly, the hairstylists at Calgary’s Ginger Group have been buzzing about it.

In Toronto, however, there seems to be some skepticism. No demand has been detected so far at Civello Salon & Spa, though the co-ordinator at Fiorio Salon & Spa will admit, “It is catching on.”

“Definitely, some people are coming in for it,” says Nicole Charles of Toronto’s Angst Hair, “and some of the stylists are laughing about it because they did it in the ’80s.”

Daburn agrees that the asymmetrical look has a long history. Today’s version is more commonly known as a “soft graduation.”

Daburn is an alumnus of London’s Toni & Guy, where one of his teachers in the early ’90s was Ben Cooke. Cooke was taking the scissors to Posh back when she was just the poutiest Spice Girl. Daburn was amazed to see him still tending Beckham’s locks on her recent reality TV series. Could he recognize the scissor-sculpting of the master in Posh’s latest do?

“The cut definitely has his flair,” he says. “I could spot it a mile away. It’s basically a Toni & Guy haircut.”

In this case, the hair has been skilfully designed to suit Beckham’s face, with layers cut in to show off her jaw, cheekbones and eyes. Daburn thinks it’s extremely becoming, because “she’s very petite and elflike and it has an elfish look to it. “It’s definitely a chic shape,” he says. And, though it can look thoroughly elegant, the Pob can be made to seem rock ’n’ roll — “almost punky,” Daburn says. “It’s a top one for her, for sure.

“I’m not sure it’s going to be as big as ‘the Jennifer Aniston’ was, because it’s shorter, and people are reluctant to go short. But this is definitely the biggest we’ve seen since then.”

Daburn believes almost anyone can wear the Pob, as long as it’s modified to play up a person’s most attractive features by cutting the layers to fall toward them. Extremely curly hair forced into a Pob would wind up looking more “abstract,” he says tactfully, but even women with a bit of a wave can manage it, if they’re reasonably skilled with a straightening iron.

Singer-songwriter Laurell Barker recently ambled into Daburn’s salon with shoulder-length dark-brown hair, and danced out of it with a spiky cap of blond. She describes her Pob as “edgy,” sort of “funky California surferchick.”

David Beckham isn’t the only one making waves with his recent move to North America. His famous wife is creating quite a stir as well…or rather, her hair is.

With three or four requests per stylist per day, the Posh Spice bob, now affectionately dubbed the ‘Pob,’ is very quickly becoming the ‘it’ do of the season. And the beauty is that this haircut can be modified to suit any face shape or skin tone. If you put your precious locks in the hands of a trained professional like Ian Daburn and his team of stylists and technicians, you can be sure to leave with a big smile on your face (our model Laurell did!).

Contrary to what you might believe, you don’t need Victoria Beckham’s diamond-shaped face or olive complexion to pull off this look. For instance, if you have a particularly square or round face (these two are usually in the same category), Ian would add more layers in the front and create an elongated shape. By doing so, he can lengthen your face and enhance more of your facial features.

If you’re Asian, you know blonde is not a suitable match. What Ian would suggest is that you avoid going too bright because your hair won’t lift the same way. If you have darker skin, warmer tones would make ideal choices and again, you should avoid those big bright splashes of blonde that are more suitable for someone like Laurell.

For those of you that have had long hair all your life, cutting it off is understandably an alarming thought, but as you can see from the video, the Pob doesn’t have to be super short. Why not experiment a little? The transformation can be amazing when you try something new and exciting. And don’t worry. If Ian doesn’t think a particular look or colour suits you, he’ll be sure to tell you and help you make the right decisions. What sets a good stylist apart from a mediocre one is their experience and their ability to communicate with a client.

Colour Expert Tanya Jackson on how to get rich-girl hair this winter.
So now that fall's goth looks are in full swing should we all be dying our hair raven black? "Definitely not" say colourist Tanya Jackson of i.daburn salon (1073 Cambie St. 604-694-0639, www.idaburn.com) noting that this fall in particular, a lot of the blonde models didn't go dark. Known for creating natural-looking, baby-fine highlights ("The chunky, stripey highlights of the early '90s should never be repeated"), Jackson prefers the other trend she's seeing: "the wealthy Harvard schoolgirl with clean, finished hair." To achieve the collegiate polish, she suggests using L'Oreal Professionnel's new Lumino shampoo ($18.95) for coloured hair ("Blondes are going to love it") and applying a smoothing balm like L'Oreal Professionnel Colour Show Liss Cream ($28.95) before blow-drying.
